Presenter, comedian and writer
Ginnia Cheng is a writer, presenter, and comedian on a mission to tell stories from underrepresented perspectives.
After gaining a law degree she went on to work on high-profile public relations campaigns for big tech brands like Google, specialising in areas like cyber security, the cloud, and data privacy. However, she decided she didn’t want to spend the rest of her life in the wild west of tech, making even more money for already-loaded tech bosses and sought a more creative path.
Though she’s very early in her stand-up journey, she’s already reached the semi-finals of the UK’s largest competitions for her punchy observational comedy, including being shortlisted for the BBC New Comedy Award 2021, as well as having been selected by the BBC Writersroom for a programme showcasing the UK’s East Asian comedy talent.
In 2020, when the pandemic hit and the Black Lives Matter movement took off, she realised she had stayed silent on important societal issues and took Raindance’s Documentary Filmmaking Foundation course so she could gain a platform to address this. Most recently, she won Louis Theroux and Amazon Studios’ “Looking For Louis” competition, where Louis said she showed an ability to “throw herself into situations and make connections in unlikely places and reveal more of her contributors, situations, and stories by having an energetic, questioning can-do attitude.”
She founded and co-hosts London’s top-rated sex-positive comedy night, which is regularly featured in TimeOut’s top 3 things to do in London. She also writes articles commenting on complex societal issues such as racism and mental health, and can often be seen in the media discussing such topics.
