Best Selling Historical Author & Social Historian

Philippa is a prolific author writing successful historical novels. She has also contributed to many television and radio programmes, as an expert on social history and royalty.

Born in Kenya, Philippa returned to England with her family and was educated at school in Bristol and college in Cardiff. She worked as a senior reporter on the Portsmouth News, and as a journalist and producer for BBC radio.

Philippa obtained a BA degree in History at the University of Sussex and was awarded a PhD at Edinburgh University for her research into 18th century literature. This was the start of her lifelong love and interest in English history. She has taught at the University of Durham, the Open University and Teeside Polytechnic, and in 1994 was made a Fellow of Kingston University.

She is now a full-time writer, regarded as one of the most successful writers of historical fiction of her generation. Her novels are published in more than 60 languages world-wide, and sell in the millions. Her books have been adapted for television and film: A Respectable Trade set in 18th century Bristol, a haunting story of slave was adapted by her it for a highly acclaimed BBC TV production which was shortlisted for a BAFTA. The Other Boleyn Girl was also adapted for BBC TV in a revolutionary new method of filming historical drama, and later adapted in a second version for the cinema starring Scarlet Johansson, Natalie Portman and Eric Bana.

Philippa makes regular contributions to newspapers, magazines, television shows and radio. She is a frequent broadcaster on BBC radio 4 and is the Tudor expert for Channel 4’s Time Team.

Philippa’s Plantagenet series of books was adapted into a 10 x 1 hour series for BBC 1. The White Queen will follow the story of the War of the Roses through the eyes of the women in the royal court. Philippa took a turn in front of the camera in the popular The Real White Queen and Her Rivals, a two part documentary for BBC2.
