Dr. Mya-Rose Craig
Mya-Rose Craig, aka Birdgirl, is an 18 year old British-Bangladeshi naturalist. She is a passionate birder and environmental campaigner who works to encourage more young people into nature, particularly from Visible Minority Ethnic (VME) communities. She writes a blog Birdgirl, which has attracted almost five million visitors and is currently writing a memoir of the same name. She regularly gives talks, writes articles and has appeared on a number of panels and television programmes including Springwatch and Countryfile.
Mya-Rose is founder and president of the non-profit organisation Black2Nature, which she set up at the age of 14. Black2Nature aims to create equal access to nature for all, focusing on VME communities who are currently excluded from the countryside. To date, more than 200 children aged between 8 and 19 have attended her weekend birdwatching and rambling camps. In recognition of her work with Black2Nature and her advocacy for VME children and teenagers, she was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Science by Bristol University, deeming her the youngest person to receive an honorary doctorate in Britain.
