Lauren Morton

British Adventurer, Ocean Rower & Endurance Runner - Star on Series 2 of 'The Island with Bear Grylls'

Lauren Morton is a British adventurer, ocean rower and endurance runner.

In December 2013 she set out to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. What should have been a 40-50 day expedition, resulted in 96 days at sea before being rescued and spending a further 18 days on an Indian cargo ship bound for Canada, before eventually arriving back in the UK four months after her departure. She survived a capsize splitting her head open, salt sores, whale encounters, a snapped rudder and a battery fire.

Lauren raised over £30,000 for her chosen charity – a hospice that cared for a friend who died from cervical cancer at just 23. Although unsuccessful in completing the challenge, her determination and grit to finish the race captured the hearts of people around the globe, resulting in both international and national press coverage. Her story was featured as part of the race documentary The Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge which broadcast on Sky Sports.

Having discovered a thirst for adventure, Lauren was selected from a group of 8,000 applicants to be one of fourteen women to appear on the Channel 4 series 2 The Island with Bear Grylls. There, she endured six weeks of starvation and dehydration and was one of the ten who made it to the end of the experiment. Lauren’s ability to push herself to the limits resulted in her emerging as the star of the series and being dubbed by twitter fans and the media as ‘The Queen of the Island.’

On the 19th of April this year, just 12 weeks after her return from the Island, Lauren set herself the ultimate challenge of running 7 marathons, in 7 days in 7 countries. A car crash in Belgium on day 5 meant that Lauren had to return home missing that marathon. Despite that setback, she completed five marathons in seven days by finishing the London Marathon on Sunday 26th April with a time of 4.27.53 seconds.

Failure is not an option for Lauren, and so in December this year, she will return to conquer the Atlantic. She will skipper a team of four women rowing unaided 3,000 miles from La Gomera to Antigua. If successful, they will become the youngest female four to have finished the crossing. The team named Row Like A Girl is campaigning for young women and girl’s rights to education, and aims to empower them to get out there and grab whatever opportunities life throws at them!

Lauren is passionate about showcasing women’s strengths both physical and mental. By challenging herself she is showing what women and girls can achieve if they dare to dream. Originally from Yorkshire, she currently lives in London.
